Can Coconut Oil Help Lose Weight?

Coconut oil's medium-chain fatty acids, as they're smaller in size than long-chain fatty acids that are commonly found in meat and many vegetable oils, can effortlessly penetrate cell (double-walled) membranes without the help of insulin and provide instant energy source to the cells, thereby boosting cellular metabolism.

When your overall body's metabolism increases, the excess fat in your fat reserves will be pulled out for use as energy to power up your body. Which means, coconut oil burns fat and yes of course, it can help to lose weight.

On page 148 of Eat Fat Look Thin: A Safe and Natural Way to Lose Weight Permanently, it says:

"Farmers are always looking for ways to fatten their livestock because bigger animals bring bigger profits. Fats and oils have been used as an additive in animal feed as a means of quickly packing on weight in preparing them for market. Saturated fat would seem like a good choice to fatten up livestock and pig farmers tried to feed coconut products to their animals for this purpose, but when it was added to the animal feed, the pigs lost weight! Farmers found that the high polyunsaturated oil content of corn and soybeans quickly did what the coconut oil couldn't. Animals fed corn and soybeans packed on pounds quickly and easily. One of the reasons these oils work so well is that polyunsaturated oils suppress thyroid function, decreasing the animals' metabolic rate. They can eat less food and gain more weight! Many people are in a similar situation. Every time we eat polyunsaturated oils our thyroid function decreases. Weight gain is one of the consequences."

In fact, not only polyunsaturated oils, even the so-called health-promoting olive oil may cause weight gain too because it carries predominantly monounsaturated fats.

In short, all unsaturated fats suppress thyroid function because the presence of unsaturation in the fat structure encourages free-radical reactions and hence, promotes oxidation. Oxidation impairs thyroid function.

Coconut oil, on the other hand, contains about 90% saturated fats, which do not oxidize easily and able to put a halt to free-radical reactions.

Therefore, when your thyroid functions normally and at the same time, your cellular metabolism are revved up with medium-chain fatty acids, you'll be able to lose weight easily.

It's common sense to take more coconut oil so that you can lose weight faster, right? True. But if you get started with too much coconut oil you might get diarrhea-like symptoms like stomach cramp and other discomforts such as headache, nausea etc. That said, start with just one tablespoon per day. It's good to spread out this one-tablespoon over the day by adding one teaspoon to each main meal.

Once your body feels okay with coconut oil after a week or so, then increase another tablespoon until you're able to take 3, 4 or even more coconut oil per day for weight loss.
